about
In 1978, Soviet geologists scouting for iron ore discovered a family of five living deep in the Siberian taiga, more than 150 miles from the nearest settlement. They were Russian Orthodox Christians, who, during the purges of the 1930s, fled deeper and deeper into the Siberian forests, bringing only those tools they could carry on their backs, eventually settling on a tributary to the Abakan. They survived in the wilderness for forty years, often near starvation, with no contact with civilization. They had no knowledge of WWII nor any political or technological developments during their isolation.
The inspiration for this track comes from their story. The title is quotation from the patriarch of the family, Karp Lykov, who said of the satellites which appeared in the night sky, "People have thought something up and are sending out fires that are very like stars." I imagined the family seeing these faint pieces of civilization during their self-imposed exile.
